Blanton’s first Book,Tales
From The Porch, was a smash
hit in 2006. Authentically written
in the vernacular passed down from
their Scots-Irish ancestors, moun-
taineers could identify with the
language, because that was pre-
cisely how old-timers talked, spun
tall tales and entertained at a time
when telling of tales was essentially
the only performing art available.
Tales From the Porch, now in its
second printing, is available in a
number of Appalachian Bookstores,
as listed on Links Page.
Blanton’s second book, Fireside Tales,
is a series of 36 tall tales and short
stories, often third person accounts,
written in the vernacular that old-timers
used in day-to-day communications, the language passed down to them from
their Scots-Irish ancestors.
The wit, humor and mountain philosophy of days gone by remind readers of how old timers lived and let live - of mountain ways. Fireside Tales is available in bookstores listed on Links Page.
For three quarters of a century Blanton has heard old-time mountaineers tell of the trials and tribulations many of their ancestors encountered when they left established Piedmont farms to cross over the rugged North Carolina mountains into a wilderness which challenged the imagination of the hardiest of souls. With dreams in their hearts and springs under their feet they were determined to pay the mental and physical price, whatever it would become. A few colorful personalities rose up to provide entertainment in the form of storytelling, the only performing art most of them would ever know...
My Mountains, My Home expounds on hardship, fear, employment, love, romance, marriage, homebuilding, hatred, crime and war - even murder; the realities of life in the mountains. Once into the novel, readers will not want to put it down - not yet anyhow.
